The key idea in this session is that the elder must be blameless before men and passionate for God.
Lecture Outline Detailed Outline Remember It1 Timothy 3:2,7; Titus 1:6
Coming at the beginning and ending of the qualifications in 1 Timothy 3, it is the overriding qualification for the rest which are more specific. Failure in any of those areas will render a man to be not above reproach.
It means to live devotedly, with intensity for the Lord. A life completely separated, that is, holy to the Lord.
- In some ways, being “beyond reproach” and being “devout” are very personal and private matters, dealing perhaps with the hidden side of a man’s life. What concrete things can one do to evaluate a man regarding these qualifications?
- How would you deal with a man who is being considered as an elder and then serious flaws are discovered in his life?
- If a man has failed in the past, but has repented of his sin, how long would he need to wait before he is “above reproach?”
- Go to a trusted friend who you know will be honest with you, and ask them, “What is my reputation among other people at the church? Do people see any glaring issues in my life relative to the elder qualifications?" Are there even any hints of not being above reproach? Write them down and pray about them, asking the Lord to help you evaluate the feedback honestly and humbly.
- What things in your life, if known publicly, might discredit you and your leadership? How should you deal with these things?
