The apostle Peter in his first epistle gave an urgent call to elders to shepherd the people of God. Join Alex Strauch as he challenges elders today with Peter’s message.
Lecture Outline Detailed Outline Remember ItThere is only one flock and one Shepherd (John 10:16). No one else is the chief shepherd but Christ. All elders are under-shepherds. Elders are under Christ’s authority. Their work must be done in a way that pleases and agrees with Christ’s teaching. Elders are not free to speak and lead the people in any way they wish. They will have to answer to Christ for their service.
An unfading crown of glory, special honor, special acknowledgement, vindication, joy, public recognition by Christ and the hosts of heaven, enjoying Christ’s presence, sharing in Christ’s glory, rewards, reigning and ruling with Christ.
The elders may not be shepherding the flock as they should. They may be ineffective, refusing to handle problems and face difficult issues of change. They may have poor communication skills. They may not be training the next generation of elders. They may be doing a minimal job.
- Describe to your fellow elders the picture you have in your mind of the day Christ appears in glory to receive and reward his under-shepherds. (Don’t forget to use the book of Revelation for reference.)
- How can elders demonstrate humility when dealing with junior leaders?
- How can junior leaders show submission to the elders of the church when they are frustrated with them?
